Vidarbha Records 21% Above-Normal Rainfall in July; Gondia Tops Region with 56% Surplus

Date:

Nagpur: Vidarbha witnessed a strong revival of the southwest monsoon in July 2026, receiving 374.1 mm of rainfall, which is 21% above the seasonal average of 309.3 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The widespread rainfall brought relief to farmers, improved water storage in reservoirs, and strengthened irrigation prospects across the region.

Among Vidarbha’s districts, Gondia emerged as the wettest, recording 668.3 mm of rainfall, which is 56% above its normal average.

Other districts reporting significant excess rainfall include:

  • Buldhana: 51% above normal
  • Yavatmal: 51% above normal
  • Bhandara: 482.6 mm (33% above normal)
  • Wardha: 330.5 mm (21% above normal)
  • Gadchiroli: 519.8 mm (19% above normal)

Moderate surplus rainfall was also recorded in:

  • Washim: 14% above normal
  • Nagpur: 6% above normal
  • Akola: 5% above normal
  • Chandrapur: 2% above normal

Among the 12 districts in Vidarbha, Amravati was the only district to report below-normal rainfall.

Against its normal average of 268 mm, the district received 246.6 mm, resulting in an 8% rainfall deficit during July.

The abundant rainfall has significantly increased water storage in major dams and reservoirs across Vidarbha.

Higher reservoir levels are expected to:

  • Improve irrigation supplies for farmers
  • Support kharif crop growth
  • Strengthen drinking water availability
  • Enhance overall water security across the region

The improved monsoon performance is expected to provide long-term benefits for agriculture and rural communities.

Meteorologists believe that if the current spell of rainfall continues over the coming days, it will further strengthen water resources and provide an additional boost to agricultural activities across Vidarbha.

The consistent rainfall has already created favourable conditions for the ongoing kharif season.
