On the occasion of the 47th Foundation Day of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari delivered a thought-provoking address in Nagpur, elaborating on the party’s ideological perspective on nationalism, secularism, and cultural identity.

Addressing party workers and leaders, Gadkari emphasized a broad and inclusive interpretation of Hinduism, describing it not as a narrow religious identity but as a civilizational ethos. “Hinduism is Indianness and nationalism. Hinduism is not a caste, not a sect, not a religion,” he stated, adding that it represents a way of life rooted in inclusivity and diversity.

Referring to constitutional interpretations, he noted that the Supreme Court has also viewed Hinduism as a way of life, reinforcing his argument that it transcends conventional definitions of religion. He described it as vast and inclusive, encompassing a wide spectrum of beliefs and practices.

Gadkari also addressed the concept of secularism, drawing a distinction between the role of the state and that of individuals. “The word secular means that all religions and all ideas should be respected. But one thing is certain: the government must be secular,” he said, asserting that governance must remain neutral and unbiased toward all faiths.

Elaborating further, he remarked, “The king must be secular, the government must be secular. But an individual can never be secular,” suggesting that personal identity is often intertwined with cultural and religious traditions.

To illustrate his point, Gadkari referred to historical instances following the deaths of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, noting that traditional rituals were performed in accordance with their faith. He used this example to argue that religion remains an integral part of personal and social life.

At the same time, he stressed the importance of mutual respect among communities. “We have to respect all religions, and our nationalism is Indianness,” he said, reiterating a message of unity rooted in shared national identity.

Highlighting India’s global cultural identity, Gadkari pointed out that Indian Muslims, when traveling abroad to places like Mecca or Medina, are often referred to as “Hindi Muslims,” reflecting their national identity beyond religious boundaries.

Gadkari’s address combined ideological clarity with cultural references, presenting a vision where nationalism is defined by Indianness, inclusivity, and respect for all faiths, while maintaining a clear distinction between personal belief and the secular nature of governance.
