The Indian Navy has taken delivery of Amini, an indigenously designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), marking another milestone in India’s domestic defence manufacturing efforts.
The vessel was delivered by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, on Thursday. It is expected to strengthen the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare, coastal surveillance and mine-laying capabilities.
Amini is equipped with advanced lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers and sonar systems designed to detect and engage underwater threats.
The warship is among the largest Indian naval vessels propelled by waterjets. It has been designed and constructed by GRSE in accordance with the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).
Its specialised equipment is expected to enhance the Navy’s ability to monitor coastal waters and respond to underwater threats.
The vessel has been named after Amini Island in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep.
The name also carries forward the legacy of the erstwhile INS Amini, a Petya III-class anti-submarine warfare corvette that was decommissioned in 2002.
Amini features more than 80 per cent indigenous content, highlighting the growing capabilities of India’s domestic defence manufacturing industry.
Its delivery supports the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims to strengthen domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported defence equipment.
The project also highlights GRSE’s contribution to India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding programme.
The delivery of Amini strengthens India’s efforts to develop specialised naval platforms domestically. Its anti-submarine warfare systems and coastal surveillance capabilities are expected to support maritime security, while its high indigenous content reflects progress in defence self-reliance.
