Ethiopian PM and EAM Jaishankar Explore Opportunities to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali in Addis Ababa on Friday to explore ways to strengthen bilateral relations between India and Ethiopia. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation, reinforcing the strategic partnership and building on recent high-level engagements between the two countries.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the meeting reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between India and Ethiopia.

During the meeting, both sides explored opportunities to deepen cooperation across areas of mutual interest.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister referred to his recent visit to India and engagements with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the broader efforts to strengthen bilateral relations.

Jaishankar also met his Ethiopian counterpart, Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos, for discussions covering trade, investment, education, culture, infrastructure, technology and development projects.

During his visit, Jaishankar toured the AI Institute in Addis Ababa, highlighting the shared vision of “AI for All” and the potential of artificial intelligence to support development and prosperity.

He also visited the Ethiopia Science Museum, describing it as a symbol of the country’s efforts to build a technology-driven, knowledge-based economy.

Jaishankar noted that science and innovation cooperation would play a greater role in the India-Ethiopia Strategic Partnership.

The meeting between the two foreign ministers covered ways to expand cooperation in trade, investment, education, culture and digitalisation.

According to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministers also exchanged views on global developments, multilateral engagement and cooperation between India and the African Union.

Jaishankar highlighted the importance of development projects, infrastructure, maritime cooperation, security and technology in strengthening bilateral ties.

He also appreciated Ethiopia’s participation in the recent BRICS Summit hosted by India.

Jaishankar said the India-Ethiopia Strategic Partnership rests on shared values, common aspirations and historical South-South solidarity.

The engagement reflects both countries’ interest in expanding cooperation while strengthening their participation in multilateral forums and India-Africa partnerships.
