Maharashtra Government Approves Kanhan Extension Under Nagpur Metro Phase 2

Date:

The Maharashtra government has approved the extension of Nagpur Metro Phase 2 from Kanhan River to Kanhan city, paving the way for a new elevated corridor worth ₹310.35 crore.

Nagpur Metro Phase 2 to Extend Connectivity to Kanhan

In a major boost to public transport infrastructure in the Nagpur Metropolitan Region, the Maharashtra government has approved the extension of Nagpur Metro Phase 2 from the Kanhan River terminal to Kanhan city.

The approval, granted on Monday, clears the way for the construction of a 1.40-kilometre fully elevated metro corridor with a new station at Kanhan town. The project, estimated to cost ₹310.35 crore, aims to improve connectivity to the northern edge of the metropolitan region and address future transportation needs.

The decision marks a significant step towards expanding the city’s mass transit network and enhancing mobility for residents in the rapidly growing region.

Proposal Based on Updated Mobility Plan

The metro extension proposal was recommended in the updated Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for Nagpur and the Nagpur Metropolitan Region.

The plan highlighted the need to extend the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) beyond the originally proposed Kanhan River terminal in anticipation of future population growth and rising commuter demand.

The Cabinet Infrastructure Committee approved the proposal on June 25, following which the Urban Development Department (UDD) issued the official government resolution on Monday.

Maha-Metro to Execute ₹310.35-Crore Project

The project will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) through a combination of state and central government support, interest-free subordinate debt and concessional loans from bilateral and multilateral financial institutions.

Of the total project cost, ₹155.18 crore will be raised through external borrowings. The Maharashtra government has approved equity assistance of ₹39.88 crore and will also provide financial support for land acquisition, rehabilitation, taxes and interest incurred during the construction phase.

Officials said the corridor will include one elevated station at Kanhan Town, while the existing MIHAN and Hingna depots will be used for operations and maintenance.

Project Targeted for Completion by 2027

According to the government resolution, the Kanhan metro extension is expected to be completed by December 2027.

The order also authorises land acquisition wherever necessary, the implementation of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), the creation of a Dedicated Urban Transport Fund and the execution of loan agreements required for project financing.

A senior Maha-Metro official said the project would soon enter the tendering stage, after which implementation activities are expected to accelerate.

Boost for Regional Connectivity

The extension of Nagpur Metro to Kanhan is expected to significantly improve public transportation options in the region and support long-term urban development plans.

By extending metro services beyond the existing terminal point, authorities aim to encourage greater use of public transport, reduce traffic congestion and create a more sustainable urban mobility network for the Nagpur Metropolitan Region.

The project is also expected to stimulate economic activity and improve connectivity between Nagpur and neighbouring areas.
